Christina Taylor-Green was born on September 11th, 2001, and tragically died on January 8th, 2011.
There is a strange happenstance here given that her birth-date was the infamous day that Al Qaeda took thousands of American lives on American soil with the attack by hijacked airliners on the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and the aborted Flight 93, and her sad death was during a frenzied gun attack on US Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords (who survived the attack) in Tucson, Arizona.
Obviously this little girl should still be with us- that she is not is a result of a combination of events. Should blame lie at someone’s door? Definitely. Can we identify whose door to lay the blame? Probably not. At the most simplistic level we can blame Osama Bin Laden and Jared Lee Loughner (the shooter). But why is Bin Laden a bitter opponent of the United States, surely because of his perception of the imperialistic foreign policies of the United States, most particularly as he sees these policies impacting on his part of the world and his people? Why was Loughner motivated to open fire indiscriminately on a crowd of people at a politicians photo-op, surely not because he disagrees with the Tea Party philosophy?
Blame may also be laid at the door of the NRA who steadfastly hold to their ‘inalienable right’ to bare arms, a right guaranteed to them under the Constitution of the United States of America. Would Loughner likely to have a weapon without this ‘inalienable right’? Doubtless in some countries that don’t have this ‘inalienable right’ there will be people killed by the misuse of guns, (but I have to say I feel a lot safer living in a country that doesn’t have police and civilians ‘tooled up’ by having such an ‘inalienable right’.)
The angel? In an act of commemoration to wee Christina, and to help family and friends grieve, heal and remember artifacts from the three 9/11 crashes will be incorporated into a statue of an angel and the work erected at the baseball ground where Christina played one of the nations favourite games with her team.
Rest in peace, Christina- you were unlucky enough to be an innocent victim of individual lunacy, stupid politics, extreme fanaticism, misguided civil liberties, arrogant internationalism, and a whole raft of things you had no control over.
