A GOOD FRIEND PASSES

I got very sad news tonight of the death of John McFarlane, an ex-teacher of mine who became a good friend. Clearly he died before his time (even though was getting on a bit) as a result of injuries sustained in a bus crash in Korea where he had stopped off on his way to Europe for another one of his canal boat holidays. John was my phys-ed teacher at Gisborne Boys High School in the sixties and as such had significant influence on my early years. I was heavily into sport and John became a mentor as well as a coach. After I left school we continued to have contact and became firm friends. John led a full life, always having an interest in others and no small part of this was organising fundraising relays that students of GBHS ran prodigious distances raising funds for IHC. He continued to be involved in service organisations in Gisborne such as coast guard, cricket, yachting and generally helping others. He will be missed.
